Principal's Corner

Dear MBES Parents,

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope this newsletter finds you well and ready to enjoy a week of preparations for family fun and memory making for the Thanksgiving Holiday and vacation ahead.

Last Friday, we celebrated Veteran’s Day. We started the day with our entire student body on the court waving flags, singing patriotic songs and saying the Pledge of Allegiance together. We were proud to lead our students in this patriotic tribute to those who have and are currently serving in our armed forces. The vision of 856 children, plus staff members and teachers all singing our national anthem together amidst a sea of flags flowing in the breeze was a sight to behold, and started our day off feeling blessed to be Americans.

As we go into the Thanksgiving break, let us remember how blessed we are to live in this great country of ours, how blessed we are to be members of the McMullen-Booth learning family and how lucky we are to be working together to make a positive difference in the lives of our most precious blessings, our children.

Have a restful and wonderful Thanksgiving!

~ Sherry Aemisegger, Principal

Community Resources—We are Here for You!

During these difficult economic times, families often find themselves in need of community resources and they don’t know where to turn to get the assistance that is needed. Our School Advisory Council (SAC) is committed to supporting our families with information that will help them access needed resources. Please check out the links available on the Pinellas County Schools Home Page. Go to pcsb.org, click on the word Community in the dark navy band at the top of the page. On the community page you can link to a resources page by clicking on the Family engagement button on the right of the page. There is also a link there to access holiday assistance from various Pinellas County agencies. Please let us know if we can assist you in any other way.

“Working together, we make a difference!” is not just a motto for MBES, but a way of work. We are here for you!

Congratulations Artists!

Five of our talented art students recently had their artwork selected by a professional jury for exhibit in Pinellas County Art Shows. At the Morean Art Center in St. Petersburg, fourth graders Gabriela Daniele, Saryna Leonardo and Maci Hollman will have their Ancestor Portraits on display though January 1, 2012. Of the 75 plus works of art in the exhibit, Gabriela Daniele won one of the top three Awards of Excellence!

Two of our fifth graders had work selected for an exhibit at the Suncoast Hospice Headquarters in Clearwater. This is also a juried exhibit! Congratulations to T’Asia Gray and Reese Frazier for their excellent Family History Collages.

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!

A Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school from Monday, November 28 – Friday, December 2. It’s a great opportunity for students to find books that really interest them. We know kids read more books when they get to choose their own. The more kids read, the more their reading skills improve.

We are inviting you to be a part of our Book Fair Family Events. They’re taking place Wednesday, 11/30 from 1:30-2:30pm and Friday from 7:30-8:30am. Join us for snacks and book shopping fun! You can shop for books for your entire family!

If you are unable to attend one of these events or you want to continue shopping from an expanded selection, you can now visit our Book Fair online at: www.scholastic.com/schoolbookfairs

The online Book Fair:

  • Gives you the opportunity to purchase books from the online Classroom Wish List created by our own school, which will help refresh our classroom libraries and give students access to a variety of new books.

  • Is available for an extended time and all orders ship FREE to school.

  • Provides a chance for you and your child to create and send wish lists to invite friends and family to participate in the Book Fair.

  • Offers an expanded book selection for all ages—from preschool to adult.
What a great way to do holiday shopping from the privacy of your own home and without little ones knowing that you shopped the Book Fair! Remember…All in-school and online Book Fair purchases benefit our school. Thanks for helping get more kids reading, kids reading
more! See you at the Book Fair!

C2C - Commitment to Character Assembly

Our character word of the month is Citizenship – being law abiding and involved in service to school, community and country.

Our school effort with Commitment to Character is continuing as we focus on using a “common language” with our key words being Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, and Motivation. Here are this week’s parent tips:
  1. Plan family service projects or civic activities. Sample projects include volunteering at a shelter, mowing the lawn for an elderly neighbor, taking a meal to a new neighbor, or working together on an environmental concern.

  2. Read to your children and keep good literature in the home. Much literature contains a rich source of material for character development.

  3. Limit your child’s spending money. Help them develop an appreciation for nonmaterial rewards. Provide opportunities for them to work and earn those things they desire.

  4. Discuss the holidays and their history. Use these opportunities to help your children appreciate the great figures in history and their contributions to our lives. Have family celebrations and establish family traditions.

  5. Share your heroes with your children. Explain why you admire certain people and the specific character traits they possess.

Counselor’s Corner - Bullying and Harassment Policy

In response to a new state law, The Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for all Students Act, the School Board recently adopted a policy that prohibits bullying and harassment. The policy ensures that all students, employees, and volunteers learn and work in an environment that is safe, secure, and free from harassment and bullying of any kind. Florida is now one of 32 states with a law regarding bullying in schools.

The Policy defines Bullying as systematically and chronically inflicting physical hurt or psychological distress on one or more student or employees and may involve but is not limited to: teasing, social exclusion, threat, intimidation, stalking, including cyberstalking, physical violence, theft, sexual, religious, or racial harassment, public humiliation, and destruction of property.

The policy defines harassment as any threatening, insulting, or dehumanizing gesture, use of data or computer software, or written, verbal or physical conduct directed against a student or employee that: Places a student or employee in reasonable fear of harm to his or her person or damage to his or her property, has the effect of substantially interfering with a student’s educational performance, opportunities, or benefits, has the effect of substantially disrupting the orderly operation of a school.

McMullen-Booth Elementary is committed to providing a safe learning environment and will not tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind. Incidents of bullying or harassment can be reported to the principal or Marilyn Taylor, Guidance Counselor or reported online at http://www.pinellas.k12.fl.us/SDFS/Bullying_report.html. Anonymous reports can also be made by calling the Campus Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-873-8477.

For more information about the policy or bullying prevention and intervention visit the Safe and Drug Free Schools’ website at www.pcsb.org/sdfs/bully_html. To learn more about bullying and find out what adults can do to help prevent it, visit the Stop Bullying Now website at www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov.
