Principal's Corner

Dear Parents –

Thank you for your participation in the many conferences that have been happening across our campus! I know that you are receiving important information that will assist in your support of your children’s academic and school success. Working together, we will make a difference in the lives of each of our students!

We are still in need of classroom adopters. Please consider supporting this worthwhile program. It costs only $100 and provides the opportunity for teachers to buy the extras that can make a difference in your child’s classroom. Don’t hesitate to get a group of families together to support a classroom. Together, we can make a difference in this area as well!

Our Red Ribbon week to promote drug awareness begins October 24th. We are encouraging everyone to wear red on Wednesday, October 26th to show their support for “Saying No to Drugs.”

Lastly, we know that times are tough and many families are experiencing challenges that they never dreamed they would have to deal with. Please know that applications for free and reduced breakfast and lunches are available in our office for anyone who would like to submit an application to see if they qualify. This is a resource that is available, and we encourage you to take advantage of it, as needed. If you don’t have the application that
was sent at the beginning of the year, just call or stop by the office and we will be happy to provide you with an application, or send one home with your child.

Have a safe and restful weekend.

~ Sherry Aemisegger, Principal

Community Happenings

The following flyers are located in the school office, and you are welcome to stop by and pick up any papers that interest you.

  • Halloween in the Park, Honeymoon Island State Park, October 28th & 29th, 6-10 pm, Food & Fun for Everyone!

The school is neither endorsing nor sponsoring the events nor approving or endorsing the views of the organization sponsoring the activity.

Family and Community Relations

We could still use additional participants for the Great American Teach-In. If you have some time to share with us on Thursday, Nov.17th, we would love to have you! Come share your interests, hobbies, or information about your occupation. Our littlest Manatees would enjoy some songs, stories or a puppet show. All presenter registration forms are due by Wednesday, Oct. 26th. If you have returned your Teach-In registration form already, you should have received a “pre-schedule” confirmation. If you have not received one, please call me to ensure you are on our speaker list. I will be contacting those of you who offered to help with the day’s activities (other than presenters!) soon. Thanks in advance for your help!

It is great to see so many of you out and about on campus! Your help allows us to provide many wonderful opportunities for our students that would not be possible without you. You are truly appreciated!

~ Barbara Hajko, Family & Community Liaison

Thought for the Day: “Without community service, we would not have a strong quality of life. It’s important to the person who serves as well as the recipient. It’s the way in which we ourselves grow and develop.”

RED RIBBON WEEK - October 24-28

In 1998, the National Federation of Parents for Drug Free Youth coordinated the first Red Ribbon Week, an eight-day celebration proclaimed by The Congress of the United States. The Red Ribbon campaign is the catalyst to show intolerance for drugs in our schools, workplaces, and communities. A Red Ribbon means that the wearer will say “YES” to LIFE and say “NO” to Drugs. Pinellas County Schools have a “zero-tolerance” policy for drug use in the Student Code of Conduct. Please be aware of this, and join us in our efforts to keep our children Safe and Drug Free. Here at McMullen-Booth Elementary, we will have some daily announcements and activities to show our support for Red Ribbon Week. Please help your children participate.

  • Monday will be TIE DOWN DAY! Everyone is encouraged to tie a red ribbon to their wrist or wear a tie.

  • Tuesday will be SOCK IT TO DRUGS DAY! All teachers, staff, and students are encouraged to wear crazy socks!

  • Wednesday will be WEAR RED DAY! Everyone is asked to wear something RED! Students will also be invited to sign the DRUG FREE PLEDGE SHEET!

  • Thursday will be HUGS NOT DRUGS DAY! All teachers, staff, and students are encouraged to bring a SMALL, stuffed animal to school.

  • Friday will be TEAM SPIRIT DAY! Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite College or PRO Team shirt because smart athletes are DRUG FREE!

Remember- Life is a GIFT! Celebrate DRUG FREE!

C2C

Our October character word of the month is COOPERATION – getting along with others and working together to accomplish a goal. As we continue our Commitment to Character efforts here at McMullen-Booth, I would like to share this week’s tips for parents:

  • Demonstrate and encourage healthy ways to resolve conflict both inside and outside your home.

  • Have family meals together (without television) as often as possible. Even if the meal is a takeout order or fast food, try to sit down as a family to eat it. Use this as an opportunity to talk with your children and to listen to their concerns.

  • Plan as many family activities as possible. Be sure to involve your children in the planning. Let them know that you value their recommendations. Have fun together!

  • Model appropriate behavior regarding alcohol and drugs. Do not provide access to drugs or alcohol to your children.

Thomas Lickona (1996), a nationally-known leader in character education, cites three compelling reasons why all schools should engage in character education: “First we need good character to be fully human. Strength of mind, heart and will – qualities such as good judgment, honesty, empathy, caring, persistence, self-discipline and moral courage – the capability for work and love…these are the hallmarks of human maturity.

Second, schools are better places – more conducive to teaching and learning – when they are civil and human communities that promulgate, teach, celebrate and hold students and staff accountable to the values on which good character is based.”

Third, character education is essential to the task of building a strong and healthy society.”

Counselor's Corner

Here are some tips for helping your child with homework.

  • Establish a routine. Make a schedule and stick to it. Decide with your child the best time and place for doing homework. You may think the best time is right after school, but your child may want a break first and do homework after dinner. Do homework at the same time every day. If your child is involved in after school activities, homework comes first! Since coaches sometimes change practice schedules from week to week, plan ahead to complete homework assignments.

  • Set up a study area. Do homework in the same place everyday. Find a place with proper lighting where your child is comfortable. A desk or table; even the kitchen table can be used before or after dinner. Help your child make a homework sign such as: “Genius at Work,” “Creative Mind Center,” or “Learning Place.” Post the sign when it is homework time. Add some personal items such as plants, pictures, or other things your child likes.

  • Homework Survival Kit: Get the supplies your child needs: pencils, eraser, pencil sharpener, paper, crayons, dictionary, scissors, glue, ruler, calculators, and other supplies. Keep supplies in a box near the study area.

  • Distractions! Distractions! Homework time needs to be a time when your child can concentrate, Work at reducing distractions and interruptions.

  • When to call the teacher: If your child is having a great deal of difficulty, schedule a conference with your child’s teacher. The teacher may be unaware that your child is having trouble with the assignments. Together you can work out a plan for your child’s success.

  • Time Spent On Homework: A general rule of thumb for time to spend on homework at each grade is: Kdg/1st – 10-20 minutes, 2nd/3rd – 20-30 minutes, 4th/5th – 30-60 minutes.
